The Department of Higher Education Policy is primarily concerned with higher education policy issues that affect your study and living conditions, Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and education policy in the Free State of Saxony and at federal level. For example, we deal with the creation of networking and support programs for international students, improvements in the area of LGBTQ+ rights, standard study time and examination regulations, and state-wide initiatives such as a Saxony-wide semester ticket, but also with smaller, concrete improvements such as the provision of menstrual products in the university toilets.
We support student councils and other university policy activists in their committee work and talk to the university management if there are problems or potential for improvement. We also use high-profile measures to position ourselves in the interests of students in order to exert pressure on decision-makers if necessary. Specifically, this includes petitions and demonstrations on topics such as the reform of student grants or fair working conditions for research assistants.
We also network the student council beyond the university. This is because many problems cannot be solved at the university, but must be tackled in student unions, the state parliament, the Bundestag, etc. To this end, we represent the StuRa in the Conference of Saxon Student Bodies (KSS), are a member of the Free Association of Student Unions (fzs), delegate one person each year as a voting member of the Studierendenwerk Dresden Administrative Board and exchange ideas with political decision-makers such as members of the state parliament. The StuRa does not represent any party-political positions, but ensures that your student concerns are heard.
Especially in times of the pandemic, the conditions in university politics and studying are very adverse. We are trying to get the best out of all the changes in study conditions for you.
Would you like to organize a discussion event or a lecture, initiate a discussion at the university on a specific topic or initiate or organize protests on a specific topic? The Department of University Politics will be happy to advise you.
