Democracy in conversation: How much (in)equality does democracy need? 1989 | 2021

Democracy in conversation

Begin 07. October 2021 - 18:00 Uhr
End 07. October 2021 - 21:00 Uhr

How important is the present and future promise of equality for a democracy? What forms of inequality, including between generations, do we find in democracy today and how dangerous are they for a democratic  community?

Revolutions always anticipate conflicts that will continue to be fought out in post-revolutionary societies. The 'Peaceful Revolution' of 1989 also negotiated the central promise of equality, which remains as relevant as ever in democracies. And so the debates of that time about questions of belonging, creative power and relationships of solidarity remain with us.

The topic of equality, equal opportunities for participation and shaping for all not only runs horizontally through society, but also vertically between the generations. The event takes historical experiences from the Peaceful Revolution as a starting point to reflect on today's experiences of equality and inequality.

We cordially invite you to discuss these topics with contemporary witnesses of 1989 as well as with young people.
