Press release on the price increase of the Germany semester ticket

Zittau/Görlitz, October 18, 2024

The announced price increase of the Deutschlandticket from 49 to 58 euros per month also affects the Deutschland semester ticket, which is an important financial relief for many students in their everyday lives. The Student Council of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is concerned about the planned price increase and is urgently calling for the ticket price to be capped, as the Free Association of Student Unions (fzs) also emphasized in a recent statement.

"For students who are already struggling with rising living costs, rents and low incomes, the Deutschland-Semesterticket is an indispensable support. A price increase of almost 20%, as is currently being considered, would represent a considerable additional burden for many of us. Instead, the price should be capped to enable this form of climate-friendly mobility to continue," explains Julia Jurczyk, spokesperson for the Student Council.

The planned introduction of the 20-euro ticket in Portugal shows that affordable and sustainable mobility is possible. In Germany, too, ticket prices should fall instead of continuing to rise. Government support for local public transport urgently needs to be increased in order to make climate-friendly mobility accessible to everyone in the long term. The financial resources required for this can be siphoned off from the current subsidies for climate-damaging technologies and fossil fuels, which are driving the climate crisis and increasing social inequality.

"It's time to get our priorities right. Instead of maintaining climate-damaging subsidies for the few, the state must invest more in the expansion and financial support of public transport. The Deutschland-Semesterticket offers an enormous contribution to the transport transition and it must not be slowed down by rising prices," emphasizes Tom Richter, Head of the Mobility Department.

The Student Council of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences supports the call for a price cap for the Deutschland-Semesterticket and calls on the federal and state governments to find financial solutions for fair and environmentally friendly mobility. Students must be relieved, not further burdened.
